SPD moments

We thought it might be interesting to keep a tally of unusual dismounts from our bikes due to SPDs, and other moments of comedy during our training.

(For those of you who don't know what an SPD is - it's the little clip that keeps your cycling shoe attached to your pedal. You turn your foot outwards to unclip before you stop the bike.)

Paul's second StuPiD moment of the tour....

....will it be the last? He managed to get all the way to the top of the highest peak and then falls off his bike in the carpark of a branch of McDonald's.... will he ever live it down??

Stu's made it into the StuPiD hall of fame!

We know you were all thinking that he'd never fall off, that he'd perfect balance, that he'd left the days of falling off a bike behind when he was a lad. But no - he's finally gone and done it, and in magnificent style. Well done Stu!

First tour StuPiD moment

Well, it had to happen sometime - congratulations to Paul for winning the first tour award by falling off his bike in a small French town somewhere between Calais and Peronne. No bones broken thankfully!

Stop press - Steve wins the SPD challenge

It's official. After his most recent (and possibly sixth?) fall off his bike because of his SPD's, Steve has officially won the 'StuPiD moment' trophy. Well done Steve and watch out France....

Steve's guide to the perfect tattoo

The rather fetching chain mark on the back of Steve's leg makes an appearance every time he rides his bike. He's now thinking that a permanent tattoo might be the way forward and slightly less oily.

George's guide to the perfect sun-tan

This is what happens when you are George and you don't wear suntan lotion but do wear gloves and a t-shirt! Comedy sun-burn - much hilarity (for the rest of us - much pain for George).
Well done George.

Latest incident

Below is a picture of Steve's thigh (thought it best to let you know what it is as it's not immediately clear...). This is the result of an incident in a field which left Steve with a bit of a broken bike and a nasty injury. More details to follow ...

Latest SPD 'incident'

Paul's recent valiant attempt to join the StuPiD club was thwarted by Stu who managed to reach him and catch him as he came to a halt without unclipping his brand new SPDs, in the carpark of the Chiltern District Council offices in Amersham. If it wasn't for Stu's lightening speed across the carpark then Paul would be joining the ranks of Steve & George. Better luck next time eh Paul?

Paul's guide to resistance training

Paul thought that he'd make the 100 mile cycle to Stu's house even more fun by wearing a waterproof jacket that billowed out like a sail behind him, creating some serious drag. This was compounded by the head wind that they cycled into. Sadly we didn't take a photo of this! We really think Paul deserves an award for his dedication to the cause.

SPD - Tally so far

So far, George and Steve are level-pegging with two comedy dismounts a piece. It's debatable who is in the lead: George with one fall into oncoming traffic outside his house after a 20 mile training ride, plus another slow motion fall into a grass ditch in Cambridgeshire. Or Steve, with an unexplained fall at the bottom of a hill on the very first group training ride, plus another on a canal tow path (fortunately not into the canal itself).

Stu, Adrian and Paul have yet to experience free-falling at a 90 degree angle towards the ground.

But we've no doubt that they will. Eventually.
